Ah, “Staycation”… the best term invented for those of us who itch for a respite from our day-to-day lives but aren’t quite feeling up for long travel, whether it be by plane, train, or road trip!
Living in Southern California, Evo and I are blessed with great weather, beautiful beaches, DISNEY(!!!!!) and tons of family-friendly activities within a 1-2 hour drive. We go to San Diego a few times a year which is 1.5 hours away and I consider that a Staycation. We always stay at our favorite hotel: Manchester Grand Hyatt. It's location, lounge, perks, view, VIP service we get every time we stay there is always top notch.
This year though, readers of T+L Magazine voted THIS hotel as the best resort in the Continental U.S, and we cannot wait to do a Staycation there. Drumroll please..... it's Mission Pacific Beach Resort in Oceanside, California. (pssttt! there's a deal when you book through us with - ahem Hyatt Prive Agent - to get your 4th night free, book by 9/25/2024*)
As always, when traveling with kids (ours is 9 months and 3.5yo), there are still a ton of things to bring no matter how close we're actually from home. I love to make sure we're packing everything that we need but not overpack! Here are some of our PSA tips for packing for a Staycation at the beach:
Ensure you bring essentials to make the most of your sunny beachside adventure. Start with sun protection:
High-SPF sunscreen - our fave is Babo Botanicals as it's safe for babies too
Wide-brimmed hats - I get the wiiideeeee brim to cover as much as possible as I like to wear makeup and don't particularly love to reapply so often. This one helps if you're on the same boat as me!
And UV-protection sunglasses for every family member. Lightweight, breathable clothing and swimwear are a must, along with flip-flops or sandals for beach days. Don't laugh, but I actually layer up with these super lightweight spf jacket for extra protection too!
Don’t forget beach toys like sandcastle-building kits and inflatable floats to keep the kids entertained. A beach umbrella or pop-up tent can provide shade during peak sun hours. Additionally, pack reusable water bottles, snacks, and a first aid kit to handle minor bumps and scrapes.
